(Oct. 2, 2009)--AT&T announced today the unveiling of a donation to The University of Texas at San Antonio of more than three dozen works of art by several prominent international artists. Many of the pieces in the AT&T Art Collection at The University of Texas at San Antonio will be displayed in the newly renovated John Peace Library on the UTSA Main Campus.

The unveiling of the collection will be at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 6 on the John Peace Library second floor. The ceremony hosted by UTSA President Ricardo Romo will include comments by state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte and Renee Flores, AT&T executive director of external affairs. Free and open to the public, the ceremony will be followed by a reception and guided tours of the 39-piece fine art collection.

"This substantial collection of 20th-century art is an outstanding addition to the university's permanent collection, and we are honored that it will be an important part of our library and learning center," said Romo. "We are very grateful for AT&T's generous support of higher education in San Antonio."

"The University of Texas at San Antonio plays a key role in making our community a great place to live," said Sen. Leticia Van de Putte. "Bolstering its art collection adds to the prestige of the school."

"The arts are critical to the well-being of a community in many ways," said Michael Antieri, senior vice president, AT&T Application Solutions. "They go well beyond simply entertaining an audience. Research shows that the arts are a catalyst for economic development, job retention and recruitment and economic stability."

From AT&T's private collection, the art represents the work of many notable artists including Esteban Vicente, Larry Chappelear and Jon R. Friedman.

The most prominent artist in the collection is Esteban Vicente, part of the first generation of the New York abstract expressionists. Many of his works are housed in the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Esteban Vicente in Segovia, Spain. Posthumously, Vicente received numerous awards including the prestigious Gold Metal of Fine Arts by King Juan Carlos of Vicente's native Spain. Among many museums that have collected his work are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of Modern Art and Guggenheim Museum.

Much of the art will be housed permanently in the newly renovated John Peace Library at the UTSA Main Campus. A $3.1 million renovation of the library recently was completed, making the library a more functional, attractive place to study and conduct research for current and future students, faculty and staff. Opened in 1976, the updated facility features accessible laptop outlets, new computers, flexible spaces for individual or group work, updated lighting, comfortable new seating and brighter colors.

A UTSA supporter for 23 years, AT&T's total giving to the university recently topped $5 million.
