Institute of Texan Cultures weather tracking station is now online

(Oct. 21, 2009)--The Institute of Texan Cultures recently completed installation of a WeatherBug tracking station at the UTSA HemisFair Park Campus. Installed on the northwest-facing entrance rooftop, the camera provides a real-time camera view of HemisFair Park in downtown San Antonio.
>> View the ITC WeatherBug Web site. A series of educational materials is available under the "Education" link at WeatherBug.com, and the institute's education and interpretation department is working to adapt the materials into a classroom curriculum.
One of the iconic sites on the HemisFair Campus grounds, the Zachry flag plaza, is visible in the foreground, a helpful indicator of current wind conditions. The camera's panorama of downtown encompasses the Tower Life Building and the base of the Tower of the Americas, an additional indicator for current weather conditions as a gauge for low-level fog.
"Texas weather is very much a factor in understanding our Texan cultures," said Tim Gette, executive director of the Institute of Texan Cultures. "Weather has shaped major events in Texas from the Great Storm of 1900 that hit Galveston Island to the Dust Bowl of the '30s and into the modern era with Hurricane Ike and the drought of this past summer. Texans have learned to adapt to hot, cold, wet and dry weather."
The WeatherBug station tracks current weather alerts such as flash-flood warnings, provides a seven-day forecast, and lists current conditions including temperature with heat index, humidity, dew point, wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, sunrise and sunset times, inches of rain in the month and moon phase. Also, the station provides latitude, longitude and elevation coordinates.
WeatherBug, the leading provider of weather information services, manages and operates a proprietary network of more than 8,000 WeatherBug tracking stations and more than 1,000 cameras strategically placed at schools, public safety facilities and television stations throughout the nation. The local WeatherBug affiliate is KENS-TV and the institute's camera has been used regularly in their news broadcast since installation. The professional-grade weather stations generate live, neighborhood-level reports every second.
