UTSA Office of P-20 Initiatives hosts S.A. ISD students at Saturday academic camp
(March 17, 2011)--This semester, 82 San Antonio ISD students in GEAR UP attended the "CSI: Saturday Academic Camp" on the UTSA Main Campus. The event featured professors and UTSA students sharing information about their majors and UTSA academic programs.
GEAR UP is otherwise known as Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. At the camp, there were presentations on biochemistry, archaeology, engineering, mathematics and statistics, health and nutrition, and psychology.
Leticia Longoria, outreach specialist in the UTSA Office of P-20 Initiatives, oversees this initiative. San Antonio ISD GEAR UP is an $18 million grant program funded by the U. S. Department of Education as a six-year commitment to the Class of 2012. GEAR UP aims to raise the academic aspirations of the entire SAISD Class of 2012.
The UTSA Office of P-20 Initiatives strives to increase UTSA's partnerships and collaborations with educational institutions, businesses, industries, community-based organizations, and public and private foundations to strengthen the quality of education in San Antonio and South Texas from kindergarten to college.
