UTSA's Belinda Flores to present in White House education webinar
(Aug. 20, 2014) -- The White House Initiative on Education Excellence for Hispanics monthly webinar will feature Belinda Flores, chair of the UTSA Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies in the College of Education and Human Development (COEHD). She will speak on Hispanic teacher recruitment in the webinar at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 20.
With Hispanics composing approximately 24 percent of public school students in the nation, only 8 percent of our teachers are Hispanic. The White House webinar will take a look at the state of Latino teacher recruitment and the practices currently in place to increase recruitment.
Flores will co-present with Cristina Alfaro from San Diego State University to highlight effective work and practices used to recruit Latino teachers, whose diversity offers huge benefits to both students and educators.
The UTSA College of Education and Human Development is a leader in Latino education initiatives and is third in the United States in producing Hispanic educators and ranked 29th in the nation for awarding master's and doctoral degrees to students of color. The college will host Latino Education Advocacy Days, an international forum on Latino education, on March 26, 2015.
