UTSA Institute for Economic Development hosts Eagle Ford Consortium meeting
(Aug. 29, 2014) -- The UTSA Institute for Economic Development Eagle Ford Shale Community Development Program (EFSCDP) and the Eagle Ford Consortium recently hosted a meeting for elected officials who reside in the Eagle Ford Shale region.
Elected officials attending included Texas Railroad Commissioner David Porter, state Representative Tracy O. King and other South Texas county and city officials.
"The Eagle Ford Consortium is composed of numerous South Texans who seek to collaborate in maximizing the benefits of the region and the communities, given the impact of the Eagle Ford Shale development, said Leodoro Martinez, chairman of the Eagle Ford Consortium.
More than 100 attendees were provided updated information on infrastructure issues affecting local communities. Topics addressed included city financing, water, transportation safety, pipelines, and other issues as a result of the oil and gas exploration.
"The UTSA Institute for Economic Development has a long history of involvement in Texas and in working with the leadership of South Texas communities to bring the expertise of the university's faculty and staff to enhance community resources, address regional problems and improve the economic well-being of the region," said Robert McKinley, UTSA associate vice president for economic development.
The communities were provided the preparatory information in advance of the upcoming 84th Texas Legislative Session set to begin in January.
"Our work with small communities has shown that most wish to build sustained economic growth that benefits the next generation. The Eagle Ford Shale Community Development Program will help these communities achieve that objective using the 21st century Tier One vision to drive research, job creation and a sustainable economic impact to the EFS region," said the Robert Velasquez, director of the Southwest Trade Adjustment Assistance Center and principal investigator of the EFSCDP.
The UTSA Institute for Economic Development is dedicated to creating jobs, growing businesses and fostering economic development. Its 12 centers and programs provide professional business advising, technical training, research, and strategic planning for entrepreneurs, business owners and community leaders. Programs serve San Antonio and the Texas-Mexico border area as well as regional, national and international stakeholders. Together with federal, state and local governments, and private businesses, the IED fosters economic and community development in support of UTSA's community engagement mission.
