UTSA College of Education and Human Development names department chairs
(Sept. 15, 2014) -- The UTSA College of Education and Human Development has named Associate Professor Jeremy Sullivan and Professor William Cooke as department chairs of the Department of Educational Psychology and Department of Kinesiology, Health, and Nutrition, respectively. Both faculty members began their new terms at the start of the 2014-2015 school year.
Sullivan joined the educational psychology faculty in 2005. He received his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University in College Station and is licensed in school psychology both nationally and in Texas. Before becoming department chair, he served as the graduate advisor of record (GAR) and director of the master's program in school psychology.
"I served as the GAR and director of the master's program in school psychology for five years, which gave me experience with program development, program assessment, student advising and coordinating class scheduling each semester," said Sullivan. "There's still a lot to learn about being department chair, but I am finding many people who are willing to help me along the way. It feels exciting to learn more about how UTSA works from a 'bigger picture' perspective."
One of Sullivan's many goals for his term as department chair is to build the capacity of the department's Psychological Assessment and Consultation Center to provide services to children, families and schools.
"Our department has made significant progress over the last few years in terms of building relationships with local school districts, community agencies and the UTSA community," he said. "I think it is critical that we continue to develop these relationships."
In addition to working with faculty and students to expand the School Psychology program, Sullivan plans to facilitate faculty support by mentoring junior faculty and providing the resources necessary for faculty research, teaching and community service.
Cooke has taught and conducted research at the university level for nearly 20 years with nine of those years at UTSA. He is director of the Applied Autonomic Neurophysiology Laboratory and adjunct professor in the Department of Physiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
"Being department chair is exciting, a little overwhelming and certainly humbling," said Cooke. "I feel I have the experience to mentor faculty effectively and respond to the ever-changing needs of our students. I am confident in my ability to communicate effectively the needs and goals of the department and I have a strong desire to do a good job."
Cooke's primary goal for the department is to advocate for the kinesiology, health and nutrition faculty through shared governance and majority decisions.
"We have outstanding faculty, and I will rely on them heavily when making decisions that affect the trajectory of our department," Cooke said. "My number one priority will be to ensure our faculty are successful and happy. Successful, happy faculty translate directly to successful, happy students."
Cooke plans to focus on increasing the graduation and retention rates of the department's undergraduate students and increasing undergraduate and graduate student involvement in research.
