(Sept. 29, 2014) -- Norma Guerra, UTSA associate professor in the Department of Educational Psychology, was named director of faculty engagement. Her nine-month appointment began Sept. 1 with the start of the school year and will continue through May.

As director, Guerra will work under Sandra Welch, senior vice provost for institutional effectiveness, to promote faculty awareness and participation in the Graduation Rate Improvement Plan (GRIP). The goal of the plan is to improve the university's graduation rates.

"One of my responsibilities includes conducting faculty focus groups to identify and explore mechanisms through which faculty members can become both aware of and engaged in enhancing student success at UTSA," said Guerra. "I have been visiting with faculty as opportunity avails."

She also will work with department chairs and deans to implement the resulting strategies and mechanisms from the faculty focus groups.

"Dr. Welch and I are in the process of visiting with each of the deans to address student success initiatives," Guerra said. "Student success is an area that I welcome dialogue."

Guerra previously served the university in a number of leadership capacities including assistant vice president for student development, associate vice president for administration and planning, executive director of human resources management and development, and most recently, department chair of the Department of Educational Psychology. Her research focuses on the facilitation of student success.
