UTSA Institute for Law and Public Affairs partners to host Law School Fair Oct. 22
(Oct. 14, 2014) -- The UTSA Institute for Law and Public Affairs (ILPA) and the Southwest Association of Pre-Law Advisors (SWAPLA) will host the 10th annual UTSA Law School Fair from 1 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 22 in the McKinney Humanities Building galleria on the UTSA Main Campus. The event is free and open to anyone planning to attend law school.
To increase diversity in law school and the legal profession, law schools are increasing their outreach efforts into communities to recruit more underrepresented students to pursue law degrees. Law schools understand that diversity in a classroom can enhance the learning process for all students.
This year's fair will feature more than 105 law schools from across the nation. Representatives will provide information about admissions, financing and the benefits of law school. Students also will have the opportunity to network.
The ILPA, through the Summer Law School Preparation Academy (SLSPA), aims to enhance pre-law educational opportunities and increase the number of Texans who gain admission to and excel in high-quality law schools. The UTSA program encompasses 12 credit hours of coursework that counts toward a student’s grade point average and legal studies minor. The courses are designed to hone the analytical, critical-reading and writing skills that students need to perform successfully in law school. Students who complete the coursework receive the ILPA’s Certificate in Legal Reasoning.
The ILPA also offers prelaw advice to help students develop their path to law school. The institute’s pre-law advisors, recognized by the LSAC, provide information concerning legal education and counsel, and assist students in the law school application process.
Since its inception, ILPA students have been admitted to more than 150 law schools in the United States, Europe and Puerto Rico. This list of diverse, distinguished universities across 44 states includes Harvard University, University of California -Berkeley, Columbia University, University of Chicago, University of Texas at Austin, Northwestern University, Georgetown University, University of Washington, Emory University, Boston University, New York University and Syracuse University.
