(Oct. 15, 2014) -- Meet Rachel Peadson. After designing and building circuit boards in her science high school, studying electrical engineering at UTSA was the obvious choice.

"I chose UTSA because I knew they had a really good engineering program," said Peadson, a UTSA junior from Harlingen. "And it was close enough to home, but not so far away that I couldn't go back on a weekend if I wanted to."

Aside from being a hardworking student, Peadson is president of the Engineering Student Council. She and this group oversees UTSA's engineering student organizations including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers student chapter (IEEE) and the Society of Women Engineers.

The council hosts several events throughout the year. Peadson says the events aim to pull students away from their textbooks and encourage them to socialize and get involved within the college.

"My favorite part about being involved [in the organization] is meeting new people," Peadson said. "It's always nice to see familiar faces in the halls."

Peadson and her fellow Engineering Student Council members volunteer their time and energy to encourage engineering students to get to know each other and to tell others about opportunities in the field.

The first event the student council will host this semester is the annual Monster Mash Pumpkin Smash on Nov. 1. Peadson says the combination of a fall festival and a pumpkin catapulting competition is lots of fun. It also gives students a chance to put engineering into practice and show what they have learned.

This fall, the council also will sponsor the Texas Energy Expo, where students can talk with employers about careers. In the spring, it will host Engineering Week, which traditionally has included events such as Engineering Organization Day, Square Root Beer Day, a "Pi" Eating and Throwing contest, and an information fair.

After graduating, Peadson plans to use the education and training she received at UTSA to get a job and fulfill her dream of traveling the world, while pursuing her passion for science and sustainable electrical development.
