(Nov. 5, 2014) -- Meet Adolfo Matamoros. He joins the UTSA College of Engineering as a Peter Flawn Distinguished Professor with the goal to expand UTSA's national recognition as it advances to Tier One.

Matamoros' research interests focus in various areas of structural engineering such as transportation infrastructure and earthquake engineering. More specifically, he researches new methods to construct and repair buildings and bridges that are sustainable and safe -- lessening the impact of natural disasters on people and seeking more efficient construction practices.

In addition to furthering his research and elevating UTSA as a top-tier research institution, Matamoros is eager to do his part in preparing his students for the workforce. "More than anything," he explains, "I want my students to leave with the proper foundation and tools to succeed as professionals."

Matamoros views Texas as a unique state, which has yet to realize its full potential in developing an advanced workforce. He thinks UTSA is well positioned to satisfy the increasing demand for high-caliber engineers.

"In the current landscape in Texas, where there are so many opportunities for success and so many people who are seeking those opportunities, I see UTSA as a much needed catalyst," he says.

Matamoros comes to UTSA with his wife, JoAnn Browning, the new Dean of the College of Engineering. They have spent the majority of their careers as faculty members at the University of Kansas. Matamoros views their arrival at the College of Engineering as an addition to the legacy already built by their new colleagues.

"We bring our experience and research backgrounds to complement the excellent teachers and young faculty of the College of Engineering," he explains, "to build a stronger community and create new opportunities for our students."

Matamoros earned his licentiate from the University of Costa Rica. He earned both his master's and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana. He joined the KU faculty as an assistant professor in 1999 and earned tenure in 2005. In addition to his academic contributions, Matamoros has extensive experience in the private sector as a consultant and is a longtime member and Fellow of the American Concrete Institute.
