UTSA Alumni Association board member honored as Teacher of the Year
(Nov. 20, 2014) -- Orlando Rummans '95, a UTSA Alumni Association board member, was recognized as the SAISD Joel C. Harris Academy Teacher of the Year at a Nov. 18 reception at the Alamo Convocation Center.
SAISD employs more than 3,400 educators, and the district's annual event formally recognizes the achievements of its outstanding educators in SAISD elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, academies, early childhood education centers and special campuses.
Rummans, who earned his degree in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in biology in December 1995, currently teaches seventh grade science and coaches the seventh grade girls and boys track teams sprints and relays. An avid Roadrunners supporter, Rummans often uses his own money to purchase tickets for UTSA football, basketball and volleyball games and brings his entire class or classes as a reward for their good behavior or performances.
A retired Army Medical Service Corps Major, Rummans is a life member of the UTSA Alumni Association and last year chaired the Diploma Dash. In 2015, Rummans will chair the UTSA Alumni Association Scholarship Gala.
As a UTSA student, Rummans was involved with the Army ROTC program, UTSA Ambassadors and the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. After graduation, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Medical Service Corp and held several leadership roles throughout his career including completing two combat tours in Iraq, one with the 62nd Medical Brigade from Fort Lewis, Wash., and another with the First Medical Brigade from Fort Hood, Texas.
Additional roles included serving as an ambulance platoon leader with the 302nd Forward Support Battalion, Camp Casey, Korea, a company commander (514th Ground Ambulance Company, 62nd Medical Brigade) and as a chief of patient administration at Reynolds Army Community Hospital in Fort Sill, Okla. For his final assignment, Rummans served as deputy director of the patient administration branch for the Army Medical Department Center and School (AMEDD C&S) at Joint Base San Antonio.
Born in Columbia, Mo., and raised in Mexico, Mo., Rummans starred in track and field and went on to earn a scholarship to Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. After a year of college, Rummans enlisted in the Army where he trained as a medic, radiological technician and food inspector. Upon completion of his enlistment, Rummans left the Army and enrolled at UTSA and served in the Texas National Guard with the 207th Evacuation Hospital, then the 1836 Veterinary Detachment.
Rummans also served Lambda Chi Alpha as the UTSA chapter (Phi Upsilon Zeta) alumni advisor for four years from August 2010 to August 2014 and is currently one of the Lambda Chi Alpha San Antonio area master stewards.
