UTSA STEM Family Day Nov. 15 to teach young students about careers
(Nov. 10, 2014) -- The University of Texas at San Antonio will commemorate STEM Week in San Antonio by hosting its third annual STEM Family Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15 in the University Center Retama Auditorium (2.02.02) on the Main Campus.
The event is one of a series of activities that are part of San Antonio's STEM Week, founded by the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Events will include Family STEM Day at UTSA, San Antonio College and St. Philip's College.
The partnership will bring together more than 3,000 San Antonio middle school students and their families to discover science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) career opportunities through free, hands-on educational experiences.
At 9 a.m., in the Retama Auditorium, NASA training specialist Debbie Ramos Trainor will discuss her experience and the importance of STEM careers. Estrella Hernandez, an SA-PREP student and ninth grader, will follow by talking about her new invention, a fitness app called We Walk.
The remainder of the morning will feature sessions hosted by representatives from STEM fields in San Antonio. The UTSA College of Engineering will host a workshop aimed to help participants understand what engineering is and experience engineering through a hands-on activity. Engineering students and staff will help participants to use their problem solving skills to creatively build an engineering marvel.
"PREP has a strong commitment to helping close the gap that exists with the STEM workforce," said Raul (Rudy) Reyna, executive director of PREP/TRIO in the UTSA Office of P-20 Initiatives. "We are excited about the opportunity to partner with organizations such as the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to get students and their families excited about STEM careers."
