UTSA President Ricardo Romo honored by North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce
(Jan. 29, 2015) – UTSA President Ricardo Romo was honored by the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce for his contributions to the San Antonio community.
Romo received the Chamber's San Antonian Award on Saturday at its 41st Annual Gala at the JW Marriott Hill Country Resort. The award honors individuals whose business achievements, charitable and civic contributions transcend his or her industry, career and immediate community.
The San Antonian honoree is the "preeminent example of personal contribution of time, talent and treasure to one's community," according to the Chamber.
Romo, a San Antonio native who grew up on the city's West Side, has served as president of UTSA for more than 15 years. During that time, UTSA has evolved from a commuter campus to an emerging Tier One research institution, with research strengths in health, cybersecurity, energy, sustainability, and human and social development.
UTSA has experienced a dramatic increase in student enrollment, from less than 19,000 in 1999 to almost 29,000 today, in degree programs, from 90 to 147, and in its annual research expenditures, from nearly $18 million to more than $50 million.
The university has significantly expanded its community outreach programs. Earlier this month, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement for Teaching selected UTSA for its prestigious Community Engagement Classification. The 10-year designation recognizes UTSA's outreach efforts in San Antonio and its impact on the global community through teaching and research, public service, volunteerism, civic partnerships and economic development.
Annie Turner of Wells Fargo, the immediate past chairman of the Chamber's board of directors, presented the San Antonian Award to Romo.
In 2010, Romo was the North Chamber's Salute to Excellence honoree. He received the honor from the organization's nonprofit arm, Lead SA.
