UTSA Lyric Theatre and Orchestra presents two one act operas Feb. 27, March 1
(Feb. 24, 2015) -- The UTSA Department of Music Lyric Theatre and Orchestra will present two one-act operas "The Old Maid and the Thief" and "Suor Angelica” at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27 and 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 1 in the Buena Vista Theatre (BV 1.326) at the UTSA Downtown Campus.
GianCarlo Menotti's comic opera "The Old Maid and the Thief" features an old spinster, Miss Todd and her live-in maid, Laetitia. Laetitia falls in love with Bob, a shiftless wanderer who visits the house one day. The two single women have to keep up with the pretenses and lies that accompany his stay while hiding him from the prying eyes of a nosy neighbor.
"Suor Angelica", a dramatic opera by Giacomo Puccini, takes place in a 17th century convent in Siena, Italy. Sister Angelica, a Florentine noblewoman, has lived in the convent for the past seven years without contact or family visitation because of a youthful indiscretion. Her aunt, the Princess, comes to visit to have her sign a document. Prior to leaving, she tells Angelica that the baby she bore years ago has died. The heartbreaking news plunges Angelica into almost committing suicide. But before she takes her own life, a miracle occurs.
The UTSA Lyric Theatre is a student ensemble directed by Associate Professor William McCrary. UTSA Professor Eugene Dowdy will conduct the orchestra.
General admission tickets are $15. Tickets for students, military and seniors ages 55+ with ID are $10. Groups of 10 or more can purchase tickets for $8.
