(Feb. 10, 2015) --The UTSA Student Leadership Center (SLC) recently named senior Crystal Alsip as the recipient for its January Roadrunner of the Month Dean of Students Outstanding Leadership Award.

Maggie Floyd, UTSA director of supplemental instruction (SI), nominated Alsip for her exemplary leadership skills and service as an SI leader. This is Alsip’s fourth semester serving as an SI leader and supporting an Introduction to Astronomy class. According to Floyd, Alsip goes above and beyond the duties required of UTSA’s supplemental instructors.

“Crystal works extremely hard to lead her students in cultivating various forums connections,” said Floyd. “Under her leadership, her SI students have done very well in their classes. Crystal is promoting lifelong learning, a commitment to excellence and exploration that I hope will be recognized by the broader university community.”

A San Antonio native, Alsip is currently studying art and minoring in astronomy/astrophysics and art history. After graduating, she wants to become a teacher. She hopes to inspire her students to see how the arts and the sciences can co-exist and create beauty in the world.

Alsip is the public relations officer for Students in Leadership, a registered student organization dedicated to promoting a sense of community, leadership and service at UTSA. She produces promotional materials for the organization’s many events and service projects, and, according to Floyd, her active involvement directly contributes to their success. Alsip produces creative promotional materials for the organization’s events and service projects each semester.

“Leadership is having the capability to connect with others: to influence, to motivate, to inspire and to make a difference in an individual's life in the most positive way,” said Alsip, when asked what leadership means to her. “Being open-minded and dedicated in what you do allows personal growth within ourselves, and allows those we connect with to grow as well.”

The UTSA Student Leadership Center Roadrunner of the Month award is sponsored by the Student Leadership Center to recognize outstanding UTSA student leaders. Nominations can be submitted via the UTSA Student Leadership website at www.utsa.edu/slc.
