(Feb. 5, 2015) -- UTSA and the San Antonio Express-News will host a town hall meeting about gentrification and inner-city revitalization at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 10 in the Buena Vista Street Building Aula Canaria (1.328) on the UTSA Downtown Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

As more people have moved to San Antonio’s downtown area, issues related to gentrification have spurred abundant controversy. The “Mayor’s Task Force on Preserving Dynamic and Diverse Neighborhoods,” created by former mayor Julian Castro, has been meeting since last summer to develop recommendations to address gentrification. The task force’s ideas could be considered by the full City Council as early as next month.

Four panelists will discuss issues related to gentrification. They include former City Councilwoman Maria Berriozabal; William Dupont, director of the UTSA Center for Cultural Sustainability; Richard Gambitta, former director of the UTSA Institute for Law and Public Affairs; and Ramiro Cavazos, president and CEO of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Francine Romero, associate dean of the UTSA College of Public Policy, will moderate the discussion.

Following remarks by the four-member panel, members of the audience will have an opportunity to ask the panelists questions about gentrification and revitalization.

Free event parking will be available in unmarked student spaces in lot D-3, beneath Interstate 35.
