(March 17, 2015) -- UTSA will dedicate the Carlos and Malú Alvarez Residence Hall at an 11 a.m. ceremony on Friday, March 20. The ceremony will take place on the UTSA Main Campus.
Students, faculty and staff and the public are invited to attend the dedication, which will honor Carlos Alvarez, president and CEO of The Gambrinus Company, and his wife, Malú, for their ongoing support of UTSA students and research. University representatives, including President Ricardo Romo, Alvarez Scholars and residents of the hall are expected to be in attendance.
The Carlos and Malú Alvarez Residence Hall, formerly San Saba Hall, was completed in 2013 and houses 618 students in a suite-style layout. The hall features an open lobby, administrative offices, meeting spaces and live-in professional staff. Residents have access to a conference room, computer lab, floor study lounges, laundry facilities and a community kitchen. It is notable for housing academic focused learning communities related to the Honors College, Top Scholars, Terry Scholars, Facilitated Acceptance to Medical Education (F.A.M.E.), Engineering, and Leadership and Service.
The Alvarez family are long-time and generous donors to UTSA. Between 2002 and 2014, the Alvarez family donated more than $4.3 million in gifts to UTSA through personal donations and support from their related foundations and companies. They are the donors of the Carlos and Malú Alvarez Endowment for Student Success, the Alvarez Graduate Research Education Excellence Fund, and the Alvarez Challenge Match for Graduate Student Excellence fund. Alvarez gifts have also been leveraged to generate millions in additional gifts and state matching funds.
Alvarez, a native of Mexico, arrived in the U.S. in 1986 to become the founder, president and chief executive officer of The Gambrinus Company. Best known as the owner and brewer of Shiner Beers, Gambrinus also owns the BridgePort Brewery in Portland, Ore. and the Trumer Brewery in Berkeley, Calif.
Alvarez is a board member of the Free Trade Alliance of San Antonio and a director for Cullen/Frost Bankers Inc. He serves on the national board of the World Affairs Councils of America and is a past president of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio.
