UTSA International Trade Center observes launch of first SBDC in Dominica
(April 2, 2015) - Albert Salgado, director of the International Trade Center's South-West Texas Border Small Business Development (SBDC) Network in the UTSA Institute for Economic Development, recently traveled to Dominica to participated in the launch of the country's first SBDC program.
The SBDC pilot program is helping the business community be more efficient, effective and export ready and establishing trade linkages with other micro, small, medium enterprises (MSMEs) through SBDCGlobal.
“The end results are what we are chasing: more tax revenues for the U.S. economy, job creation, new business start-ups, and exportation of products to the rest of the Western Hemisphere,” said Salgado.
SBDCs, established throughout the U.S. by the federal government in partnership with state governments and universities and colleges, assist entrepreneurs and business owners in establishing and growing their businesses through a free and confidential suite of advising services. Services include, but not limited to, feasibility studies, business strategy, financial planning, marketing, production and professional networking. The Centers support new and existing businesses.
Roselyn Paul, Dominica Minister of Commerce, Enterprise and Small Business Development, said that the government of Dominica recognizes the importance of small and micro-enterprises to the social and economic development of the country.
“The micro and small business sector has proven itself in terms of its continued contribution to national development and has further potential to create and expand employment opportunities to develop entrepreneurial skills. The sector could also enhance market opportunities and encourage export promotion and import substitution," stated Paul.
