UTSA Public Policy lecture series presents leading expert on the Arab Spring April 14

(April 10, 2015) -- The UTSA College of Public Policy Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series presents a special talk by Gilbert Achcar, professor of development studies and international relations in the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. The free, public lecture will take place from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14 in the Frio St. Building Multipurpose Room (FS 1.402) at the UTSA Downtown Campus.
The lecture, titled “The Arab Upheaval – Roots, Dynamics, and Prospects,” concerns the many facets of the Arab Spring wave of demonstrations and uprisings that occurred throughout the Arab world and Middle East in 2010 and 2011.
Achcar is one of the world’s leading experts on the conflict in the Middle East. He specializes in non-religious Arab on Arab disputes. He is an expert on the fundamental causes and effects of the different economic and political structures of the North African and Middle Eastern nations.
His research interests and publication topics include: the political economy and sociology of globalization, the global power structure and grand strategy, empire theory and the unfolding of US hegemony globally and in the broader Middle East, politics and development economics in the Middle East and North Africa, the sociology of religion in general, of Islam and Islamic fundamentalism in particular, social change and social theory.
Achcar is the author of 11 books, including “The People Want,” published by University of California Press, which interprets the events of the Arab Spring through different socio-economic and political lenses; he has also published more than 100 articles on the Middle East. His books have been published in Arabic, Chinese (Mainland and Taiwan), English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Romanian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Urdu.
Achcar received his Ph.D. in Social History, specializing in International Relations from the Universite de Paris – VIII (Saint-Denis).
The UTSA College of Public Policy Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series features scholars and policy analysts on a variety of major issues affecting the community, the nation and the world. Lectures are free and open to the public and free parking is available in Lot D-3 beneath IH-35. Refreshments will be served.
