Honors College scholar to discuss Mexican migrations at Briscoe Western Art Museum

UTSA Honors College scholar John Phillip Santos discusses Mexican migration in a video focusing on opportunities in the American West.

(April 13, 2015) -- Poet, writer and producer John Phillip Santos will be the featured speaker in the Distinguished Lecture Series: Voices of the West at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14 in the Jack Guenther Pavilion at the Briscoe Western Art Museum, 210 W. Market St..

Santos will trace the paths of Mexican migrations, both ancient and modern, and discuss the profound effects they had on the American West.

The lecture is co-sponsored by the museum and the UTSA College of Public Policy. Admission is $10 per person, free for UTSA students, faculty and staff and Briscoe museum members.

A San Antonio native, Santos spent 20 years living in New York City working as a freelance filmmaker, producer, journalist and author.

His book, "Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation," received criticall acclaim and was a National Book Award finalist. Santos also produced documentaries and news programs in 16 countries for CBS and PBS.

Currently he is serving as the University Distinguished Scholar in Mestizo Cultural Studies in the UTSA Honors College and teaches seminars in Mestizo cultural studies, and a workshop in creative nonfiction writing and media.

The Briscoe Western Art Museum, named in honor of the late Texas governor, Dolph Briscoe Jr., and his wife, Janey Slaughter Briscoe, preserves and interprets the art, history and culture of the American West through engaging exhibitions, educational programs and public events reflective of the region's rich traditions and shared heritage. Located along the River Walk, its campus includes the restored, historic 1930s art deco/neoclassical former San Antonio Public Library building, which serves as the museum space with nine galleries on three levels.
