(April 10, 2015) - The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) will host "Symbols of Texas Family Day" featuring student art exhibits capturing Texas symbols or mottos on Sunday, April 12. The free family day includes hands-on crafts such as bluebonnet making, armadillo bracelets, coloring activities and more.

The ITC recently partnered with Monarch Academy, a component of Morgan’s Wonderland, inviting students to display their interpretations of state symbols and mottos in “Texas, our Texas!” a student exhibit running through May 3.

"Symbols of Texas Family Day" lets kids and families explore state symbols, mottos and favorite aspects of Texas culture, just like the Monarch Academy students did for their exhibit.

Visitors can participate in crafts that capture the spirit of Texas in symbols such as mocking birds, blue topaz, chili, armadillos, bluebonnets, longhorn steers, and a host of well-known and unfamiliar emblems that have come to define the Lone Star State.

“We had the privilege of presenting at a Morgan’s Wonderland family program,” ITC educator Christian Clark explains. “That event led us to the Monarch Academy and the beginnings of a collaboration. Family Day is the culmination of that partnership, as the students celebrate their work on display in a real museum, and the community is invited to celebrate with them.”

The range of Texas icons, symbols and sayings provided a broad subject base for the academy’s students and their range of skills. The project resulted in 28 pieces and artist statements for the exhibit.

“Engaging students across the state with a rare and highly rewarding experience is what our student exhibit program is all about,” said Clark. “Adding a free family day to the experience opens the doors to the community, to show what students are capable of accomplishing, and to celebrate Texas culture being preserved and appreciated in a new generation.”

Sunday museum hours are noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call 210-458-2300 or visit TexanCultures.com.
