Center for Civic Engagement hosts engaged scholarship poster contest
(May 14, 2015) ---- The UTSA Center for Civic Engagement, in collaboration with the Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry Showcase, recently held its first annual Engaged Scholarship Poster Contest. The contest highlighted student engagement in the community through community based research and service learning.
A team of faculty and staff judged entries in three separate categories. Winners included:
- Outstanding Community-Based Research Project – Individual: Raege Omar
Omar, a sociology student in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts, developed “Texas Somali Refugees’ Cultural Beliefs in Health, Illnesses and Help Seeking Behavior,” a research study examining the health beliefs, mental illness and help-seeking behavior of this population and its cultural beliefs and practices when determining sickness or suffering. Omar’s faculty advisors were Thankam Sunil and Tamara Casso.
- Outstanding Community-Based Research Project – Group: Melissa Hernandez and Laura Bustillos
Hernandex and Bustillos in the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning developed a poster titled "Park Accessibility Barriers in San Antonio Neighborhoods." Azza Kamal guided the pair as they studied physical characteristics that act as barriers and prevent local residents from using four area parks frequently.
- Outstanding Service-Learning Project – Group: Martin Vazquez, in collaboration with students of Jamie Newsome's Gender and Crime course in the Department of Criminal Justice
Vazquez and his partners developed a course project for ChildSafe, a local agency that provides specialized services to children who have been abused or neglected.
