(July 3, 2015) -- High school juniors and seniors from the San Antonio area escaped summer boredom by learning the ins-and-outs of forensic science at the UTSA Criminal Justice Summer Camp, held June 22-26 at the Downtown Campus.
The camp, now in its fourth year, is hosted by the UTSA Department of Criminal Justice and coordinated by Robert Rico, criminal justice lecturer. It is designed to give students hands-on learning experience in how the criminal justice system functions.
Students developed their investigative skills through different activities, toured an FBI crime lab and applied scientific theories to simulated criminal investigated. The camp also gives students a sample of the different types of careers available in the field of criminal justice.
"I'm really glad I did the camp," said Parker Staples, who will be a junior at the International Schools of the Americas (ISA) Magnet School this fall. "Even if I decided to focus on another subject, there are still ways for me to apply it to a criminal justice career."
A new component to the Criminal Justice Summer Camp focused on restorative justice. Students explored the concept of rehabilitating criminal offenders through inclusive and cooperative processes. Restorative Justice is a cooperative process that focuses on the harm done to the victim.
"The restorative justice session was a very unique experience," added Staples.
Even the parents of the students were excited about what the camp had to offer.
"My daughter thought each day was interesting, and the camp provided real world experience and not just lecture," said Laurie Staples, Staples’ mother.
