(July 28, 2015) -- Gregory Goff, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Tesoro Corporation, will address 1,600 middle and high school students as the 37th San Antonio Prefreshman Engineering Program (SAPREP) draws to a close at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 30 in Freeman Coliseum.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, by 2018, the U.S. will have more than 1.2 million job openings in science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related occupations. Yet the Bureau predicts there will be a significant shortage of qualified high school and college graduates to fill these jobs.

SAPREP was established in 1979 by UTSA mathematics professor Manuel Berriozabal. This summer, the program (PREP I, PREP II, PREP III and PREP IV) was offered on 10 San Antonio campuses.

The seven-week program includes lectures, projects, seminars and hands-on activities that allow students to learn and apply advanced STEM concepts. The curriculum includes, but is not limited to, mathematics, problem solving, engineering, physics, technical writing, water science, nanotechnology, computer science, cyber security, research and STEM career awareness. PREP students also have the opportunity to earn college scholarships and for those that attend public schools, high school elective credit.

More than 18,000 San Antonio students have completed at least one summer component. The program also has been replicated in 12 cities as TexPREP and across the nation in five states as PREP-USA. Overall, PREP programs have served more than 38,000 students since program inception.

Goff has extensive international business experience across Europe, Asia and Latin America. He earned a bachelor of science degree and a master’s of business administration degree from the University of Utah. Prior to Tesoro, Goff held several leadership positions at ConocoPhillips.

Based in San Antonio, Tesoro is an independent refiner and marketer of petroleum products that, through its subsidiaries, operates six refineries in the western U.S. and has a combined production capacity of more than 850,000 barrels of oil per day.

Beginning in 2016, half of Tesoro’s strategic community investments will be dedicated to supporting STEM education initiatives that better prepare middle school, high school and career and technical education students for professional and academic success by increasing access to high-quality educational resources and instruction. The company’s success relies on its ability to recruit and retain employees with exceptional STEM-related skills.
