Maricela Oliva appointed associate vice provost for academic and faculty support
(July 15, 2015) -- UTSA associate professor Maricela Oliva has been named associate vice provost for academic and faculty support. She assumed her new responsibilities today.
In her new role, Oliva will serve as a liaison to the Faculty Center and help facilitate the implementation and review of all faculty support programs, including faculty mentoring and faculty recognition programs. She will also support initiatives related to the Downtown Campus.
"Maricela brings excellent experience to higher education administration and she is passionate about ensuring that UTSA faculty are successful in their teaching, research and service activities," said Jesse T. Zapata, senior vice provost for UTSA Downtown and Academic and Faculty Support.
Oliva is a faculty member in the higher education program within the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. Her research addresses college access for Latinos and other underrepresented students, P-20 initiatives to aid in the collaboration between schools and universities, cross-cultural issues in higher education and higher education policy.
In all, Oliva has more than 30 years of experience within Texas higher education, including seven years at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. She currently serves on the Academic Assembly Council of The College Board and is a past elected Council Member at Large for the postsecondary division of the American Educational Research Association. In addition, Oliva is a past participant of the Provost's Leadership Academy at UTSA and recipient of the UTSA President's Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in University Service.
Prior to joining UTSA in 2005, Oliva held teaching positions at Texas A & M University, the University of Texas-Pan American and the University of Texas at El Paso.
"I am excited to start this new role in support of academic excellence at UTSA," Oliva said. "Academic support is integral to faculty and student success as UTSA works toward Tier One status."
A native Texan and first generation college student, Oliva grew up in Donna, Tx., along the Texas-Mexico border and is bilingual in English and Spanish.
