Veinticinco exhibit at UTSA Downtown Art Gallery showcases top Latino artists
Share this Story(Aug. 10, 2015) – San Antonio's vibrant Latino art scene is on display in a new exhibit of 25 master prints at the UTSA Downtown Art Gallery.
Ten years in the making, the 25Veinticinco exhibit includes prints by 25 Latino and Latina artists who worked in collaboration with a master printer in the print studio at the UTSA Department of Art and Art History.
The exhibit was co-curated by UTSA President Ricardo Romo, Arturo Infante Almeida, curator of the UTSA Art Collection; and Kent Rush, UTSA professor of art and art history.
The images, printed on 22" x 30" archival paper, were produced using various techniques, including stone and aluminum plate lithography, etching and aquatint, linocut, and screen-printing.
"The artists in this series come from many walks of life. Each has no doubt taken a path that most certainly informs their work," Almeida said. "Yet, their participation in this project speaks of a common acquaintance, one rooted in a particular awareness of the large and fluid Latino/Latina experience."
The 25Veinticinco project began in 2005, when 25 Latino artists were invited to create original prints, employing a variety of printing techniques. It includes works by Richard Armendariz, Andy Benavidez, Cody Bustamante, Sam Coronado, Richard Duardo, Xavier Garza, Jose Guadalupe Guadiana, Daniel Guerrero, Luis "Chispas" Guerrero, Christopher Gutierrez,Benito Huerta, Leticia Huerta, Luis Jimenez, Cesar Martinez, Richard Martinez, John Mata, Malaquias Montoya, Juan de Dios Mora, Alex Rubio, Armando Sanchez, Luis Valderas, Anita Valencia, Debora Kuetzpal Vasquez, Carla Veliz and Guillermina Zabala.
Working in the UTSA Printmaking Studio, the artists collaborated initially with master printer Neal Cox and, later, with master printer Steven Carter.
"There is something magical and synergistic that happens when a creative artist works with an innovative and professional printer," Rush said. "This series of 25 prints is ultimately a tribute to the vitality of the region's Latino art scene. The cross section covers established artists, mid-career artists and a sampling of new and emerging artists. The variety of imagery, styles and concepts is extremely diverse and dynamic."
25Veinticinco will be on display through Oct. 12 at the UTSA Downtown Campus Art Gallery, Durango Building, Room 1.122, 501 W. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd., from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. An opening reception will held on Thursday, Aug. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m.
