UTSA’s First Civic Engagement Summit to Highlight University’s Mission
(Sept. 4, 2015) — The Center for Civic Engagement will host its first Civic Engagement Summit to showcase and share the variety of community-engaged activities of UTSA students, faculty and staff. It will be held on Monday, October 5th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the UC Denman Ballroom.
“We have much to celebrate and be proud of having recently obtained the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation,” said Brian Halderman, Director of the Center for Civic Engagement. “In the process of applying for the recognition, it was noted that we need to do a better job sharing across campus the variety of projects and programs that are engaging the community. The Summit is an attempt for us to address that concern.”
A Call for Posters is an opportunity for UTSA’s programs to highlight their purpose and impact locally, nationally, and globally. The deadline for Call for Posters submission is September 11. It's open to all UTSA departments, organization, centers, etc. that are currently engaged in community work.
Throughout the Summit, a series of breakout sessions will highlight ways to become more engaged with local community efforts as well as current on-campus initiatives.
“We hope that UTSA community members will take advantage of these on-campus sessions to learn about more ways they can be active citizens of the San Antonio community,” Halderman said.
Peter Levine, associate dean for research and Lincoln Filene Professor of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Tufts University, will provide the Summit’s keynote address, “The Promise of Civic Renewal in America.”
“Dr. Levine is one of the most significant scholars of our time on the topic of civic renewal and the advancement of our democracy," Halderman said. “He brings a unique perspective through his research on civic learning and engagement.”
The Center for Civic Engagement is dedicated to supporting UTSA’s mission to empower students, faculty, and staff to serve society through community engaged scholarship that enriches learning, promotes civic literacy, and contributes to the study of community needs and resources.
