College of Architecture, Construction and Planning Dean John Murphy named Blumberg Professor
(Jan. 5, 2016) -- John D. Murphy Jr., dean of the UTSA College of Architecture, Construction and Planning, has been named the Roland K. Blumberg Endowed Professor in Architecture, effective Jan. 1.
The professorship was established in 2007. It is one of several endowments at UTSA established with gift funds from the Roland and Jane Blumberg Foundation of Seguin, Texas. The endowed professorships (in music, biosciences and biology, as well as architecture) all are named in honor of the Blumbergs, who were strong supporters of public higher education in Texas.
“Dr. Murphy has brought significant recognition to the college since becoming dean in 2009,” said John H. Frederick, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “We are so pleased to be able, in turn, to recognize his achievements by appointing him as the Blumberg Professor. This endowment will allow him, at his discretion, to further expand the college’s research and professional outreach activities in support of students.”
Under Murphy’s leadership, the college has created three dedicated centers for research and outreach (the Center for Architectural Engagement, the Center for Cultural Sustainability and the Center for Urban and Regional Planning Research) and added the Department of Construction Science. Additionally, Murphy has expanded the college’s international studies programs as part of a signature experience for all its students.
In 2014, the college changed its name (from the College of Architecture) to better reflect the breadth of its academic, research and outreach programs.
“I am honored to be the named recipient of the Blumberg Endowed Professorship in Architecture,” said Murphy. “The College of Architecture, Construction and Planning has been very successful in our research and engagement efforts, and the professorship will be utilized to continue that success.”
Prior to joining UTSA in 2009, Murphy spent nine years as the head of the School of Building Science at Auburn University. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Building Construction, Master of Science in Construction Management, and a Ph.D. in Architecture from Texas A&M University.
