UTSA engineering professor Ram Krishnan receives NSF CAREER award
(Feb. 22, 2016) -- Ram Krishnan, assistant professor in the UTSA Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award. The award includes a $500,000 grant to support his research in cybersecurity over the next five years.
Krishnan says that the need to share information online while confining it to authorized recipients is one of the most challenging problems in cybersecurity. His CAREER funding will focus on the problem of specifying, analyzing and enforcing information sharing policies.
“It’s overwhelming that both the NSF and my peers are convinced that my work can have a significant impact, and is worth investing in,” Krishnan said. “My collaborators at UTSA have been remarkably supportive over the years, and I certainly couldn’t have done it without them.”
NSF CAREER awards are reserved for junior faculty members to help develop their career as teachers and scholars. The award will support Krishnan’s pursuit in academia to conduct innovative research that is tightly integrated with a compelling education program. It will also support the training of UTSA undergraduate and graduate students in research topics related to cyber security.
The UTSA cybersecurity program is ranked the best in the nation, according to a national survey of certified information technology security professionals. Last fall, UTSA was designated by the Department of Homeland Security to create information sharing standards to strengthen national cyber security.
“The College of Engineering is very proud of Dr. Krishnan’s accomplishments at UTSA, and this CAREER award is yet another reflection of his academic excellence,” said JoAnn Browning, dean of the UTSA College of Engineering. “The fact that this comes so quickly after he received the UT Regent’s Outstanding Teaching Award last fall shows what an impact he makes on his students, colleagues, and engineering programs.”
