(Feb. 1, 2016) --In recognition of academic distinction, leadership and professional service, Rogelio Sáenz has been appointed as the inaugural holder of the Mark G. Yudof College of Public Policy Dean’s Endowed Professorship. The appointment was effective Jan. 1.

This new endowed position, which was approved by the UT System Board of Regents in November, is named for the former chancellor of the University of Texas System (2002–2008).

Sáenz has been dean of the UTSA College of Public Policy since 2011.

He is the author of numerous publications with emphasis on Latinos, demography, race and ethnic relations, immigration and inequality. He is co-editor of Latinas/os in the United States: Changing the Face of America (2008) and International Handbook of the Demography of Race and Ethnicity (2015), and co-author of Latinos in the United States: Diversity and Change (2015) and Latino Issues: A Reference Handbook (2011).

“Endowed faculty positions allow UTSA to recruit and retain outstanding scholars,” said UTSA President Ricardo Romo. “Since joining UTSA five years ago, Dean Sáenz has expertly led the College of Public Policy while distinguishing himself and the university in national conversations on Latino demographics and immigration.

Before he joined UTSA, Sáenz had been a faculty member at Texas A&M University since 1986, additionally serving as head of the Department of Sociology from 1997 to 2005, and College of Liberal Arts Cornerstone Faculty Fellow from 2008 to 2011.

“I am very honored by this appointment, which reflects the great work that is going on in the College of Public Policy,” Sáenz said.

The College of Public Policy enrolls more than 1,300 students each year in the areas of criminal justice, demography, public administration and social work.
