( Feb. 18, 2016) -- UTSA will host its annual Texas Language Education Research (TexLER) Conference on Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20 on the UTSA Main Campus.

The TexLER Conference, which is coordinated by graduate students in the UTSA Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, housed in the College of Education and Human Development, focuses on bringing together researchers and educators from around the world to discuss new linguistic and language education research and promote collaboration in those fields.

“The TexLER Conference provides a venue for interdisciplinary collaboration and discussion,” said Belinda Flores, chair of the UTSA Department of Bicultural-Bilingual studies, adding that conference attendees will be able to engage with top-tier leaders, educators and researchers in their field. “This year, we expect one of the largest conference gatherings that we’ve had. I commend our students for their hard work and vision in planning what is sure to be a truly outstanding event.”

The TexLER Conference will open with a special presentation by Margarita Machado-Casas, UTSA associate professor of bicultural-bilingual studies at UTSA. The conference’s featured keynote speakers will be Ana Celia Zentella, professor emeritus in the UC San Diego Ethnic Studies program, and Deborah Palmer, associate professor of bilingual/bicultural education at the University of Texas at Austin. Throughout the two-day conference, local and international researchers will discuss their linguistic or multilingual education research or practice-based experiences. UTSA will also host a poster session to give students an opportunity to network with researchers, educators and experts.

This year, as part of the TexLER Conference, UTSA will also host a supplemental event – the third International Research Colloquium on Educational Linguistics and Language Education –that will focus on bi-national research and collaboration opportunities between universities, colleges and organizations specifically located in the U.S. and Mexico.

“This year, TexLER has grown to new heights,” said Vanessa Mari-Acevedo, bicultural-bilingual studies graduate student and lead coordinator for the event. “Events such as this help demonstrate the top-tier opportunities UTSA provides its students.”
