(March 21, 2016) -- The UTSA Center for Civic Engagement and Student Leadership Center, alongside members of the UTSA community, will show their support by joining the greater San Antonio community in the upcoming 20th Annual César E. Chávez Legacy and Educational Foundation March for Justice. The march, taking place on March 26, 2016, is co-sponsored by the City of San Antonio and the César E. Chávez Legacy and Educational Foundation March, and has attracted as many at 25,000 participants in past years.

Prior to the march, The UTSA Department of Social Work Student Council and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of South Texas will jointly commemorate and celebrate Chávez with a short program about his life and work. This program starts at 8:30 AM, on UTSA’s downtown campus, Buena Vista Building 1.322. The event is family-friendly and will include a light breakfast, as well as an opportunity to create signs for the march. After the program, the group will meet up with the annual march at Guadalupe and Frio Streets.

The City of San Antonio and Chávez Legacy and Educational Foundation will have a community program beginning at 9 a.m. at the corner of Guadalupe and S. Brazos Streets. The march to Alamo Plaza will begin at 10 a.m. Individuals with UTSA are encouraged to be there no later than 9:30 a.m. and look for the UTSA Banner to find their designated spot in the march. After the march, a free shuttle will be provided at Alamo Plaza to return individuals back to start of the march at Avenida Guadalupe.

César E. Chávez was a second-generation American who became a community organizer for Latino, farm, labor, and civil rights. Growing up in a migrant farm worker family, Chávez personally experienced the hardships and lack of fairness for farm workers. Chávez went on to coordinate voter registration drives, campaigns against racial and economic disparities in urban areas and led the first successful farm workers’ union in American history. Chávez’s motto “si se puede” (“yes, it can be done”) inspires and empowers individuals to believe in achievable goals even when the situations may seem insurmountable.

On the day of the march, the hashtag #utsaengaged will be used on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for any up-to-the-moment notifications for the UTSA community.
