2016 UTSA Fiesta® medals on sale April 1
(March 30, 2016) -- It’s that time of year again. With Fiesta® on the horizon, the official UTSA Fiesta® medals will go on sale this Friday.
UTSA President Ricardo Romo helped develop the 2016 UTSA Fiesta® medal, which features colorful flowers blooming behind Rowdy that are accompanied by the words “Viva Fiesta!”
Dubbed San Antonio’s “party with a purpose,” Fiesta medal sales support local nonprofits. The 10-day celebration honors the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. Fiesta spans April 14-24 and is in its 125th year.
According to the Fiesta® San Antonio Commission, medal collecting and trading is one of Fiesta’s® most popular traditions, dating back at least 50 years. Details regarding the origins of the tradition are fuzzy, but every year, more than 100 nonprofit organizations, including UTSA, sell and trade the festive medals for fundraising and awareness.
Beginning April 1, Fiesta®-goers can purchase the UTSA Fiesta medal at Roadrunner Express, the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures and the Fiesta® Store on Broadway.
Roadrunner Express is located on the UTSA Main Campus along the University Center Paseo between the fountain courtyard and Rios Golden Cut Salons. Store hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Medals will be $3 for departmental purchases and $5 for all others if bought at Roadrunner Express. UTSA Fiesta® medals can be sent to the UTSA Downtown Campus departments via campus mail or picked up at the Main Campus. For off-campus purchases, medals can be mailed with an applicable shipping charge.
Proceeds will benefit the UTSA Student Affairs Transformation Fund that provides opportunities for students and staff to develop and expand their leadership skills for success.
