Kenneth P. Trevett named executive director of local Vaccine Development Center

(March 25, 2016) -- Kenneth P. Trevett has been named executive director of the Vaccine Development Center of San Antonio, a collaborative research program co-founded in 2012 by The University of Texas at San Antonio, the Southwest Research Institute and the University of Texas Health Science Center.

“The Vaccine Development Center has been an excellent resource for UTSA researchers to collaborate in their work to find solutions to prevent and treat infectious diseases,” said Bernard Arulanandam, UTSA assistant vice president for research and co-scientific director of the Vaccine Development Center. “I have no doubt Ken will do an excellent job in facilitating such vital work.”

UTSA is home to the South Texas Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Center for Innovative Drug Discovery. Scientists from both research programs are frequent collaborators with the center on top-tier research in vaccine development and the prevention of infectious diseases.

The center’s two major focuses are encouraging collaboration among scientists in vaccine research, which includes applying for grant to fund collaborative proposals, and an annual symposium on infectious diseases, immunology and vaccines. Trevett’s responsibilities will include strategic planning, resource development and management of these top-tier programs.

“I am honored to be part of a successful collaboration among researchers at four of the City’s prestigious scientific institutions,” Trevett said. “This inter-institutional model is still in its infancy, and we need additional funds to assure its success. I am confident that the Center can accelerate vaccine development, reduce costs by eliminating redundant infrastructure and promote a culture of cooperation.”

Four symposia on vaccines have been hosted by the Center, with a fifth to take place in San Antonio in November. The symposia have attracted internationally known speakers and have added to the prestige of San Antonio as a city of science and health.
