Educational Experience Film Festival awards ceremony is April 14
(April 6, 2016) -- The 2016 Educational Experience Film Festival (E2F2), UTSA’s second annual film festival highlighting videos produced by the university community, culminates April 14 with an awards ceremony in the Buena Vista Theater at the Downtown Campus. The program starts at 6 p.m.; a reception will follow.
E2F2 video submissions can be viewed on the festival’s Vimeo site now.
Distinguished Senior Lecturer John Phillip Santos will serve as master of ceremonies for the event. Awards will be presented in five categories:
- Best Academic Impact
- Best Communication Impact
- Best Documentary
- Best Student Project
- Best Traditional Feature, Short or Animation
In addition to the awards presentation, UTSA faculty member Enrique Alemán Jr. will deliver a keynote address on his own documentary film, Stolen Education. The film details his research on a little-known federal desegregation court case, Hernandez et al. v. Driscoll Consolidated School District (1957), in which Mexican American children were systematically retained and enrolled in three levels of first grade. Stolen Education has been screened at universities and colleges, public libraries and in public schools across the U.S.
Alemán, who is chair of the Department of Education Leadership and Policy Studies, will speak about his film-making process and how the documentary has allowed him to broadly share his research. The story also a personal one for Alemán: his mother was one of the children who testified on the stand against the school district.
“Video is such a powerful medium, and it is becoming an increasingly important tool in reaching our digitally informed students,” says Sunay Palsole, associate vice provost for digital learning. “Many of our faculty and students already use video effectively both in and outside the classroom; E2F2 is really a celebration of that work and a means to further promote the use of video as a teaching tool and as a way to capture innovation at the university.”
E2F2 is sponsored by the Office of Information Technology, The Digital Learning Office and the Video Production Group.
