Meet a Roadrunner: David Tueme ’14 is an entrepreneur on the rise

Share this Story(June 1, 2016) -- Meet David Tueme ’14. This young entrepreneur learned how to start a business while studying at UTSA.
Born in Torreón, Mexico, Tueme came to San Antonio in 2010 to earn his undergraduate degree.
“I knew I wanted to study in the U.S., and I saw San Antonio as this hub of international activity,” he said. “UTSA was at the center of that cultural melting pot, so it was just a no-brainer that I would go there.”
Tueme enrolled as a business major but was initially uncertain about the area of business that interested him the most. He dabbled in management at first but eventually realized his true love was management science.
As a management science major, Tueme learned how to build a business from the ground up.
“I was fascinated by how to start a business,” he said. “I love the challenge of starting something from nothing and then working to make it more efficient.”
The UTSA student also learned how to work in a professional environment and how to stand out in a job interview. He says his business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, gave him a strong sense of community and leadership.
Tueme immediately landed a job after graduation. However, just three months into it he quit and formed a company with a former classmate, Fernando Tarnez. Their business, Pros on the Go, delivers fresh, healthy meals to working professionals. The idea was inspired by the duo’s time as business majors at UTSA.
“We were studying hard and we didn’t have time to prepare healthy meals,” he said. “We were eating a lot of fast food, so it was hard to stay healthy.”
Tueme says that meeting leaders in the San Antonio business community through UTSA made it much more feasible for him to start out on his own after he graduated.
“The resources the university provided just blew me away,” he said. “The entire UTSA community was just very welcoming and supportive.”
Now, just after his company’s first anniversary, Tueme says he still draws on many lessons he learned at UTSA including perseverance, time management and professionalism.
“If I hadn’t gone to UTSA, I know I wouldn’t be here,” he said. “The hardest part of building a business is taking an idea to a reality – and not just because it requires a lot of resources and a lot of work. You have to change your entire life and personal outlook, and make it happen.”
