UTSA and UTHSCSA hosts research forum on health and wellness for soldiers
(May 20, 2016) -- The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) is hosting the second annual San Antonio Military Health System and Universities Research Forum (SURF) today at the UTSA Main Campus. The event highlights the latest research and discoveries of trainees, faculty, staff and students from health-related disciplines.
Last year's inaugural forum exceeded expectations with hundreds of health care professionals and researchers from both military and civilian institutions attending what turned out to be one of the city’s largest professional development forums dedicated to health care research.
“UTSA is pleased to be hosting SURF once again this year. It’s a great opportunity for members of our local military to share their research with their civilian counterparts,” said Bernard Arulanandam, professor of microbiology and immunology at UTSA and interim vice president for research. “This networking can lead to new collaboration and partnerships to advance and eventually lead to breakthroughs in research areas that can better support the health and welfare of military and those in our community.”
The forum begins with opening remarks at 8 a.m. in the H-E-B University Center ballroom, leading into a series of presentations about technology and innovation in healthcare, preventative medicine, health literacy and communications as well as a wealth of other topics. In addition to connecting members of the military with local scholars, SURF will provide local and regional military members and health care professionals with the opportunity to earn CME and CNE credits at no cost.
“The Military Health Institute is honored to support forums such as the SURF. This communication enhances the research collaboration across academia, the Department of Defense, and the Veterans Administration. Members of the armed services in San Antonio are leading the way in research based on battlefield experiences,” said Byron C. Hepburn, M.D., U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. (Ret.), who is the founding director of the Military Health Institute at the UT Health Science Center. “The insights gleaned from care provided to our soldiers in the field are often translated to better care of our civilian population.”
