Artists bring their work to life at UTSA Alumni Gala
Annual gala helps raise money for UTSA Alumni Association scholarships and programs
(August 16, 2016) -- More than 25 premier artists have generously donated their work to The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Alumni Gala to help raise money for UTSA Alumni Association scholarships, programs and services.
This year, the Alumni Association partnered with UTSA Art Collection Curator Arturo Infante Almeida, who suggested how to incorporate art in a creative way during the event.
“The UTSA Alumni Gala is great fun,” said Almeida. “It is an event I always look forward to. This year’s silent auction will include fantastic works by some of San Antonio’s premier artists.”
International, contemporary artist and alumnus, Cruz Ortiz ‘00, will be donating an original painting of the UTSA Sombrilla for the evening’s live auction. A limited number of poster prints of the design will be created on-site and will be for sale.
Award-winning folk artist, Veronica Castillo, who specializes in tree of life clay sculptures, will demonstrate her intricate painting technique. A limited number of her painted hearts will be available for purchase during the silent auction.
“Several of the auction artists will be in attendance as well, adding a layer of authenticity to the pieces, engaging the guests in their world,” said Jana Kennelly, assistant vice president for alumni engagement and executive director of UTSA Alumni Association.
Kennelly says the UTSA Alumni Association helps more than 30 UTSA scholars in top-tier undergraduate and graduate programs with scholarships funded by proceeds from the annual Alumni Gala. The scholarships are $5,000 and are renewable for four years.
“The Gala will be a fun evening to celebrate the impact of our alumni on the University,” said Kennelly.
The UTSA Alumni Gala will feature a cocktail reception, silent and live auctions, dinner, awards and an after party presented by San Antonio Credit Union. It will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa.
The gala brings together UTSA alumni, friends and guests to celebrate the Association’s 39 years of scholarships, services programs and to honor the 2016 Alumni Award recipients. Since 1980, the UTSA Alumni Association has awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarships to support UTSA students.
