Meet a Roadrunner: SGA President Andrew Hubbard wants students to get involved

Student Government Association president seeks to create atmosphere of civic engagement at UTSA

(Aug. 15, 2016) -- Meet Andrew Hubbard. This senior finance major is the president of the UTSA Student Government Association (SGA).

"UTSA has given me an amazing opportunity to grow as a leader," said Hubbard, one of the first transfer students to serve as UTSA's SGA president. "I feel like I am truly learning what it means to be a servant leader. I'm grateful to be able to collaborate, mentor, encourage and support our amazing and energetic students."

Hubbard and his fellow SGA officers have been meeting many of their constituents over the last few months. The UTSA student leaders spoke directly to the approximately 7,000 incoming freshmen and transfer students attending Orientation this summer, encouraging them to get involved.

"We're out there every week talking to students about their needs through one-on-one conversations, canvassing, setting up tables or surveys," Hubbard said. "It's all about making sure students receive a top-tier experience at UTSA."

As SGA president, Hubbard wants to inspire UTSA students to become active members of the university community by joining student organizations, like the SGA, and attending events.

"UTSA is a great place to grow," Hubbard said. "I want to help students get involved in their community for the next four years. I have made so many great friendships and met so many interesting, amazing people here. I want that for my fellow Roadrunners, too."

Because this is an election year, Hubbard and SGA Vice President William Trynoski also hope to encourage students across San Antonio to be engaged civically. One of their first actions will be to spearhead a citywide voter registration initiative in collaboration with other local student governments.

"As college students, we are the leaders of tomorrow," Hubbard said. "The nation will be looking to us to lead conversations about the future. It's important that we get out there and make our voices heard."

During his term, Hubbard said he wants to continue the strong collaboration that the SGA has built with the UTSA community and leadership to best support the student body. He considers that atmosphere of collaboration one of the strongest aspects of UTSA.

"UTSA is structured to help its students be their best self," Hubbard said. "The way that happens is with teamwork at all levels. It's when we sit down together that we can make sure our students are getting the best experiences possible."

Hubbard expects to graduate in 2017. Afterward, he plans to make use of the leadership skills and education he is gaining at UTSA.

"If I can get a job at a company that has similar values to me and has the same kind of energetic, passionate people that I have met at UTSA, I'll be fulfilled," he said.
