Grant will fund UTSA service-learning projects throughout San Antonio
(August 30, 2016) -- The University of Texas at San Antonio Center for Civic Engagement, in collaboration with District 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg, are launching the new City of San Antonio (COSA) Challenge Grant Program. The program’s mini-grants will provide funds to individual UTSA students and groups of students to create experiential learning opportunities in partnership with a non-profit or public sector agency in San Antonio.
“I often hear from faculty about the need for mini-grants to support service-learning projects in the community,” said Brian Halderman, director of the UTSA Center for Civic Engagement. “I am deeply grateful that Councilman Nirenberg stepped up with direct support to enhance UTSA’s top-tier student learning experience; this investment will result in clear benefits for the community.”
The goals of the program include enhancing student education through community-based learning initiatives that create mutually beneficial relationships to solve public problems through student social innovation and expertise, to engage faculty in the mentorship and guidance of student-driven service-learning initiatives and to build relationships with non-profit and public sector agencies.
“I strongly believe in the creative energy and ingenuity of our university students to solve public problems,” said Nirenberg. “This grant program is one way to ignite the fire of social entrepreneurship and provide support to student ideas that will positively impact San Antonio.”
Proposals must be submitted through the UTSA Center for Civic Engagement website by a UTSA student or a group for a course or co-curricular projects with a faculty mentor and community partner. Awards will range from $100 to $500 for an individual student submission and up to $1000 for a group or class submission.
Funding for this grant program is provided through the generosity of Councilman Nirenberg’s discretionary funding in the City Council Project Fund.
The UTSA Center for Civic Engagement provides support for students, faculty and staff who want to serve their community, nation and the world. The center’s mission is to empower students to serve society by taking an active role in their community to enhance the quality of life for the common good.
