New professors learn about UTSA resources
(August 17, 2016) -- This week, UTSA’s newest faculty cohort are attending a series of orientation activities to help prepare them to hit the ground running come the first day of classes on August 23.
This fall, UTSA welcomes 40 new tenured and tenure-track faculty members. They hail from prestigious U.S. institutions such as Case Western Reserve University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, New York University, Purdue University, Stanford University, University of Connecticut, University of North Carolina and Virginia Tech. Faculty are also coming from international institutions such as the Italian Institute of Technology in Italy, Stockholm University in Sweden, and Queensland University of Technology in Australia.
Through the Provost’s New Faculty Orientation and orientations within their respective colleges and departments, the faculty get a crash course on UTSA’s vision, culture and important offices, policies and procedures. They learn about their vital role in UTSA’s research mission, how to help their students succeed, and how to balance their teaching and research with service opportunities.
They’ll also learn how to be successful in their jobs by discovering the many resources available to them. One place to explore those resources is the UTSA Faculty Center, which is housed in the John Peace Library. It is a spot where faculty can meet to talk about top-tier research, exchange ideas and explore online resources. The center helps facilitate collaboration between faculty members in different departments.
During orientation, new faculty will receive advice from second-year and recently tenured faculty. Their welcome will conclude with a bus tour of the city and dinner hosted by UTSA President Ricardo Romo and sociology professor Harriett Romo.
On Saturday, August 20, the university will host an orientation for the new full-time non-tenure track faculty members to provide them with similar onboarding resources and information.
After the orientation activities, the hope is that these new Roadrunner faculty members will be energized to start the school year, have a sense of collegiality, and be proud to be a part of such a dynamic, supportive and high achieving institution.
