Happy first day of classes, Roadrunners!
(Aug. 23, 2016) — Welcome back, ‘Runners! The new academic year is officially in session today as classes begin on the Main and Downtown Campuses.
This fall, UTSA welcomes 40 new members to its quickly growing faculty. These top-tier researchers are among the best in their fields and specialize in a variety of expertise. This year, experts in everything from hard science fields such as biology, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, environmental science, information and cybersecurity to social sciences such as art and art history, psychology, philosophy and classics, and anthropology will join students in the classrooms. These new faculty come from such prestigious universities as Stanford University, New York University and Vanderbilt University and from all over the world.
UTSA undergrads and graduate students will have the chance to work alongside these exciting new world-renowned researchers this fall to study some of the most pressing global issues of the 21st century.
These types of opportunities are why UTSA continues to be a destination for top ranked students across Texas and abroad. The UTSA Top Scholar program has entered its fourth year with a fresh class of highly talented new students. The merit-based scholarship gives these students the resources necessary to grow into tomorrow’s leaders, both here in San Antonio and across the globe.
The Top Scholars aren’t the only high quality students joining UTSA this year. Nearly 60 percent of incoming freshmen graduated in the top quarter of their class, and 89 percent graduated in the top half of their graduating class.
Beginning today, Roadrunners will notice a few changes to Main Campus. Walk around campus and you might notice some of the fruits of UTSA’s summer labors. The John Peace Library food court has been given an overhaul, with new furniture and food options, including a built-in P.O.D. market and healthy dining restaurant Greens to Go. Some laboratories and classrooms have also been updated, and landscaping projects have been happening all summer long.
New students might want to check out some of the top-tier academic and support services that UTSA offers. For academic support, students can count on the Tomás Rivera Center for Student Success and the San Antonio Writing Project. UTSA’s Campus Recreation facilities and Student Health Services are also open to help students stay fit and healthy.
Finally, remember that Roadrunner Days continues this week. From now through Sunday, Aug. 28, UTSA is hosting a variety of back-to-school activities and events designed to start the new academic year off right. Join the UTSA community in celebrating all that it means to be a Roadrunner.
Go, ‘Runners!
