UTSA educates students and the community about tradition of el Día de los Muertos

(October 27, 2016) -- An interactive event to educate the community about the tradition of el Día de los Muertos will be held on The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Main Campus on Wednesday, November 2.

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and throughout Latin America that coincides with All Saints and All Souls Day. Traditionally, families place offerings such as sugar skulls, pan de muerto and other items at altars they create to honor deceased loved ones.

UTSA students and members of the community will be able to see an elaborate altar that took artist Andy Villarreal several months to create in Gallery 23 inside the UTSA University Center.

“In "Altar Para Las Culturas Indigenas de Yucatán" Andy Villarreal invites the viewer to walk through his work. He gives the viewer a uniquely poetic remembrance of the indigenous cultures of the Yucatan," said Arturo Infante Almeida, Art Specialist and Curator for The UTSA Art Collection. “Altars incorporate objects and symbols that appeal to all of the senses in the service of capturing, commemorating, celebrating and preserving the past."

In addition to the altar exhibit, there will be performances, a poetry reading and discussion about the history of the holiday led by distinguished UTSA Honors College scholar John Phillip Santos.

“It is a unique and fulfilling time to remember and honor loved ones who are no longer with us in both a visual and personal way. We hope the campus community will participate and visit the exhibit often,” said Ann Margaret Trujillo, Associate Director, Student Center for Community Engagement and Inclusion.

The event, scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m., is sponsored by the UTSA Office of the President, University Center and Student Center for Community Engagement and Inclusion.

Those in attendance will also enjoy free face painting, pan dulce and hot chocolate.
