UTSA CACP associate dean Hazem Rashed-Ali to lead international architectural research consortium
(Nov. 7, 2016) -- Hazem Rashed-Ali, associate dean of research and graduate studies in the UTSA College of Architecture, Construction and Planning, has been elected to serve as president of the Architectural Research Centers Consortium Inc. (ARCC).
“I am honored to serve as president of the Architectural Research Centers Consortium,” said Rashed-Ali, who joined UTSA in 2006. “I aim to further strengthen the leadership role played by the organization in expanding research culture into schools of architecture in the U.S. and internationally.”
In his role as president, Rashed-Ali will work with more than 60 universities, architectural schools and architecture research centers in north America and internationally. Since its founding in 1976, ARCC has sought to synthesize academic research practices with those of architecture and design disciplines. UTSA has long been an ARCC member institution, and Rashed-Ali has served on the organization’s board since 2011, including serving as the consortium’s vice president for the last two years.
Rashed-Ali added: “I believe that my election to this position represents UTSA and the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning’s continued commitment to top-tier objectives. It is also indicative of the growing recognition of UTSA architecture at the national and international level.”
In keeping with its mission of advancing architectural research, ARCC each year hosts one of the largest national conferences on the subject. Hundreds of attendees from around the world come together to share new research, architectural practices and academic work. ARCC’s most recent conference was held in Lisbon, Portugal in collaboration with the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE). ARCC is also home to the Journal for Architectural Research, which publishes new works by leading researchers in the fields of architecture, construction and design each year.
As an associate professor in the UTSA Department of Architecture, Rashed-Ali teaches a variety of courses including building technology, performance simulation, and design studios at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. In 2014, he received the University of Texas System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award, one of the largest awards in the nation for outstanding faculty performance.
A widely published author in sustainable architecture and urbanism, Rashed-Ali’s research emphasizes minimizing negative environmental impacts of construction through the designing of high-performance, energy efficient and carbon neutral buildings and communities. Earlier this year, he embarked upon a year-long assessment for a City of San Antonio initiative meant to replace disadvantaged local homeowners’ old roofs with energy efficient alternatives.
Rashed-Ali holds a Ph.D. in Architecture from Texas A&M University. He holds a master of science in architecture with a focus on energy efficient buildings from Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom, and a bachelor of architecture from Ain Shams University in Egypt.
Rashed-Ali is a registered architect in Egypt.
