New Mexico Tourism Department shares six musts for UTSA bowl bound fans
(December 14, 2016) – -- UTSA football fans are packing up and preparing to head to the Land of Enchantment. Before they witness their beloved Roadrunners in their inaugural bowl game against the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday, Dec. 17 in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl, they have plenty more to see. The New Mexico Tourism Department has put together some ideas to make the 700 mile trek to Albuquerque a true vacation.
Road trip it
The first town UTSA fans will reach once they cross into New Mexico is Tatum. Hungry fans may want to stop at the Steak House Café, which is known for the best steak fingers and apple pie across the Texas border. Continuing west through Roswell, a stop at the International UFO Museum and Research Center guarantees an "out-of-this-world" experience. The tourism department suggests breaking up the trip with an overnight stay in Cloudcroft at The Lodge Resort & Spa, an enchanting Victorian-themed resort nestled among the town's mountains.
See more than the game in Albuquerque
Learn about the state's 19 pueblos at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. The city is also home to some unique stops like the rattlesnake museum and hot air balloon museum. Take in Route 66 in the city's eclectic Nob Hill neighborhood or see the sunset from a unique perspective – the top of the Sandia Mountains – via a tram ride.
Try NewMex cuisine
New Mexicans add a little kick to the familiar TexMex with red and green chile. Guests can check out the cuisine is by exploring the restaurants on the Breakfast Burrito Byway or the Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail, which has earned the title of the No. 1 food trail in the U.S. by USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards.
Do you know the way to Santa Fe?
Less than an hour from Albuquerque, Santa Fe is in a world all its own. Drive or take the RailRunner train to experience the famed Santa Fe Plaza with its unique shops, museums and restaurants, historic churches, and the huge collection of galleries along Canyon Road. Santa Fe also has a special holiday tradition. Paper bags filled with sand and a candle called Farolitos give the city a special glow.
Take in the holiday hot spots
Albuquerque BioPark's River of Lights is a popular festive attraction. A stroll through historic Old Town Albuquerque will get Roadrunners in the holiday spirit with the historic adobe plaza – home to more than 100 galleries, shops and restaurants. On the way back to San Antonio, stop in Carlsbad for an overnight stay to experience Christmas on the Pecos. Under the blue-black night sky, boats set off each evening to slip past more than 100 twinkling scenes drawn in light by local homeowners and businesses, ranging from traditional Yuletide decorations to alien abductions.
Stay for the Slopes
Each New Mexico Bowl ticket can be redeemed for one free lift ticket at any of New Mexico's alpine ski areas Dec. 18 – Dec. 25, 2016, by simply presenting their ticket stub at guest services upon arrival at the ski area.
