Fall 2016 Commencement ceremonies include new regalia for graduates
(December 16, 2016) -- UTSA doctoral students will don blue, custom commencement gowns this weekend, starting a new tradition for San Antonio’s largest public university. Bachelor’s and master’s degree candidates will also wear blue robes as they cross the commencement stage on Saturday at the Alamodome.
"The new regalia emphasizes the proud traditions of a Tier One university," said De’Brenna Agbenyiga, vice provost and dean of the UTSA Graduate School. “The custom gowns that our doctoral and terminal degree candidates will wear symbolize the years of hard work that these students invest to achieve their academic goals.”
A discussion to introduce new Commencement regalia at UTSA began last year during a Conversations with the Vice Provost and Dean forum. At the forum, UTSA doctoral student Reanna Roby suggested UTSA enhance its regalia to promote itself like other premier research universities.
With input from Roby, the Student Government Association and other UTSA students, the university began the process of changing its Commencement regalia. Graduate student leaders met with UTSA academic affairs and student affairs administrators to review new options for doctoral graduates, ultimately choosing the style and design they believed best represented UTSA’s community of graduating professionals and scholars.
UTSA doctoral candidate Elisabeth Krimbill expressed pride to have the name of her alma mater stitched into the fabric of her commencement gown, and to have bright orange piping along the seams.
Roby added, “UTSA's custom regalia for students like me is more than another robe. It’s a reminder of the sacrifices and support given throughout the entire academic journey. This regalia also serves as a tangible representation of UTSA’s seat at the table.”
