UTSA Student Government President, Vice President to be decided in a run-off election
(March 21, 2017) -- Students at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) will make their voices heard again this week by voting in a run-off election to decide who will become the next Student Government Association (SGA) President and Vice President.
Seven UTSA students originally ran for president and three for vice president. Since no candidate received the majority of 50 percent plus one, the top two candidates in each office will go head to head in a run-off to declare the winners.
Marcus Thomas and Terralyn Wilburn are the presidential candidates. Brittany Garcia and Marcos Mullin are vying to become vice president.
Vote for SGA candidates on RowdyLink.
This is the first time in school history that seven UTSA students ran to be named SGA president. Barry McKinney, associate dean of students and director of UTSA Student Activities, attributes the growing interest to current SGA President Andrew Hubbard and the SGA administration.
"Andrew has really taken the power of his position and spread that across the SGA to the extent that more people have had the opportunity to see how they can make a difference at UTSA," McKinney said. "It's that excitement of what can happen on campus."
The UTSA SGA President has three key roles: serving as chief executive officer over the organization, advocating for the student body outside of UTSA, such as speaking with state legislators and city council as the voice of the students, and speaking at public events on behalf of the university. The Vice President supports the President in serving the UTSA student body.
The UTSA SGA run-off election is today and tomorrow. All UTSA students can vote on Rowdy Link.
The run-off results will be announced Thursday, March 23 at 4 p.m. in front of the SGA office in the H-E-B University Center (HUC 1.214).
