UTSA students showcase their artistic talents in the tunnels on Main Campus
(March 28, 2017) -- The tunnel system at the UTSA Main Campus turns into a musical and artistic venue this weekend. The third annual "UTSA Underground" will be held on Saturday, April 1 at 8 p.m. below the Arts Building, Flawn Sciences Building, Multidisciplinary Studies Building and UC Lawn.
"I think UTSA Underground is valuable to the school and city because it gives all students with any creative projects the opportunity to share them with a large audience," said Dylan Ilseng, a senior, music marketing major and president of Musicians of Business at UTSA.
UTSA Music Marketing students came up with the idea in 2015 to use the facility tunnels beneath the campus to showcase students' creative talents. The loading docks will be used as stages for musical acts to perform and for artwork to be displayed.
Ilseng said visual artists such as Clay Fusion, Jillian Piepenburg, Robert Wilson and Rebekah Hurst, to name a few, are getting involved this year. Musical artists, many who are students, such as Volcan, Freestyle Friday's, Farewell summer and more will be performing as well.
"Since the event is open for anyone to attend, it gives the greater San Antonio community a chance to explore what students at UTSA are working on," said Ilseng.
Students involved in the UTSA Music Marketing program, under the mentorship of Stan Renard, helped organize this event. This top-tier multidisciplinary program not only prepares students to be musicians but also to enter the highly competitive music industry by teaching them about marketing, entrepreneurship, communication and management.
