Roadrunners asked to make a personal commitment to keep each other safe from sexual violence
(April 3, 2017) -- The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) will ask students to take a pledge to stop sexual assault and misconduct at the 3rd annual It's on Us Call to Action Day. The UTSA awareness event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4 at the University Center Paseo on the Main Campus.
Organized by the UTSA Police Department and UTSA Inter Fraternity Council, UTSA student organizations and departments will line the Paseo with information tables on the university's education, training and awareness initiatives to raise awareness of and prevent sexual misconduct and sexual assault involving students. Currently, UTSA offers more than 40 initiatives and educational events to students, faculty and staff.
"Every student at every university deserves a safe environment where they can learn, discover and grow," said UTSA Interim President Pedro Reyes. "UTSA has a long-standing commitment to confronting this profound issue and we will continue to use every resource available to us to ensure the well-being of our students."
Reyes is currently forming a campus task force, comprised of faculty, staff and students, to assess the effectiveness of the university's current 40-plus programs, and to identify the need for new programs or approaches to reduce incidence rates and increase reporting rates. The task force will be charged with ensuring that initiatives are integrated into daily campus life to reinforce appropriate behaviors and raise awareness of programs and support services offered to victims.
During It's on Us Call to Action Day, attendees will be asked to make the It's On Us Pledge, a personal commitment to keep women and men safe from sexual violence. The event will include be interactive games and a photo booth where Roadrunners can take pictures and share how they're committing to be part of the solution.
"We can all use our voices to change the culture to prevent sexual violence," said Cpl. Maranda Tupper, who leads the UTSA Police Department Crime Prevention Unit. "Prevention requires addressing the root causes and social norms that allow sexual violence to exist. We want survivors to know they're not alone and UTSA has a support system and resources for them."
The UTSA community is encouraged to use the hashtags #NotOnMyCampus, #UTSAItsOnUs and #BeaksUp during the event.
The month of April is designated as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Across the country, governments, schools and other organizations will raise public awareness of sexual violence by focusing on the importance of prevention and by empowering survivors of sexual violence to speak out, connect to resources and report.
UTSA is ranked among the top 400 universities in the world and among the top 100 in the nation, according to Times Higher Education.
