UTSA supporters help more Roadrunners succeed

UTSA supporters help more Roadrunners succeed

Jim and Katie Reed

(Dec. 15, 2017) -- From academics to athletics, Jim and Katie Reed are supporting as many students as they can at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

If their names seem familiar, it might be because the Reeds have been a power couple of university and community support for decades.

Both educated in Missouri, the Reeds' philanthropic history with the university began in the 1970's, and since then they have supported a variety of areas, including the Roadrunner Athletic Fund, the Institute of Texan Cultures and the construction of the Biotechnology, Science and Engineering Building.

"We've watched UTSA grow and grow," said Jim, who serves on the UTSA Development Board and is also president of the San Antonio Medical Foundation. "We feel that the education UTSA provides on a broad base is the backbone of the city. It's the city's university—if UTSA succeeds then the city will succeed."

Drawing from her experiences as a public school teacher, Katie has served in a wide range of leadership positions across San Antonio. She was first elected to the Board of Trustees of Northside ISD in 1990 and has served seven terms as president.

Seeing the impact UTSA continues to have in the community, the Reeds decided to push their UTSA support even further. They applied funds allocated through a donor advised fund to establish the Katie N. Reed Endowed Scholarship in the College of Education and Human Development.

Most recently they have also used the donor advised fund to establish an athletics scholarship. The scholarship will be available to all student-athletes in any sport.

"The only thing we requested was that it should be given to somebody who really needs and deserves it," said Katie.

Jim and Katie said working with advisors to create the fund was easy. They feel fortunate to have a ready resource to fulfill their philanthropic passions, and help more Roadrunners succeed.
